Below is a letter sent via e-mail on 8/30/09 from Valerie Hernandez '09, winner of the "Leader and a Scholar" $1,000 scholarship from the alumni assoiciation:

Dear Compton High School Alumni,

This is Valerie Hernandez, the recipient of the "Leader and a Scholar" scholarship. I'm pleased to inform you that I've just returned from University of California, San Diego's (UCSD) OASIS Summer Bridge this past Friday. Due to that profound experience, I am sure of being ready for this next step in my life, the actual college life. I would like to say thank you for honoring me with your decision by awarding me with the scholarship. As requested, I've attached my proof of enrollment at UCSD. If any other information is needed, please feel free to request it as soon as possible.

P.S. expect updates on my journey through college.

Sincerely,
Valerie Hernandez
