"REACHING BACK TO MOVE FORWARD"

Windsor Convalescent Center visit on Saturday, April 19, 2008.  The volunteers prepared over 100 bags for the patients.  Pictured on the far right are the Community Services co-chaipersons, Mona Gregoire McClure '68 and Phyllis Wright Williams '68.

December 2009

The Compton High School Alumni Association (CHSAA) continues to be the kind of non-profit organization that supports its community.
On Tuesday, December 21, 2009, the CHSAA Community Services Chair and Co-Chair, Phyllis Williams and Mona McClure, respectively, wrapped new toys and delivered them to the Compton Homeless Shelter for Women and Children.  The Homeless Shelter's staff and the recipients of the gifts are always appreciative of the CHSAA's support.  This represents the second consecutive year this Homeless Shelter has received new toys for the kids donated by the CHSAA.  Visit the Photo Album page for pictures.  Click here for The Compton Bulletin article covering the Christmas 2009 event.

August 2009

The CHSAA Community Service committee delivered clothing to the Compton Welfare Rights Organization, Inc. Homeless Shelter for Women and Children on Saturday, August 29, 2009. Chairpersons Phyllis Wright Williams '68 and Mona Gregoire McClure '68 gathered the clothing from the CHSAA board members and separated them. Phyllis and Deborah Spottsville delivered the clothes to the shelter. This is the second visit to the shelter and the women are very appreciative. (Read the letter from the shelter below.)

COMPTON  HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

C/O Ms. Phyllis Williams

Dear Ms. Williams:
On behalf of the Clients, Board of Directors, Staff and Volunteers of Compton Welfare Rights Organization, Inc., we would like to say what a great honor it is to have Compton High School Alumni Association standing shoulder to shoulder with us and lifting your voices with ours, when we say to the homeless women and children and the disadvantaged throughout our community, that you are no longer alone.

To experience the wonderful spirit of charity that you showed, by not only sharing your time with us but donating the clothing and the toys for the children of our shelter are moments that will be deeply cherished. We thank you for making the holiday season joyful and complete with your presence. All of our clients are living daily with the misfortune of being in a total crisis situation (homelessness). Your thoughtful support during the holiday season was a wonderful boon and made even more special knowing you put your whole self into it.

Compton Welfare Rights Organization, Inc. is a sixty (60) day program for homeless women and women with children geared towards total self-sufficiency. Unfortunately, due to the national economic crisis, state and federal program cuts are on the rise and we need your help and the help of those like you to continue our endeavors in keeping our homeless program thriving. We look forward to your consideration as a continuing recipient of your commitment in helping homeless women and children in our community.

Thank you, Ms. Williams, and please pass our thanks to Compton High School Alumni Association, we appreciate their humanitarian efforts and all of you more than you know.

Sincerely,
Bernice La Cour, Shelter Director
